To recap.<\/p>\n

This was the first day of a 1600 mile solo bike ride.<\/p>\n

I’d never done anything like this before.<\/p>\n

And…<\/p>\n

I just turned 50.<\/p>\n

Many things had happened this year of my life.  Not the least of which was my first wife having a heart attack at work and dying earlier in the summer.<\/p>\n

I share more of the details of that story and my subsequent being barred from attending her funeral here:<\/p>\n

Dehydration And My 1600 Mile Bike Ride<\/h2>\n

In this story, I am on a long-distance bike ride with a super huge problem.<\/p>\n

I was out of water.<\/p>\n

It was the middle of August.<\/p>\n

Hot.<\/p>\n

Burning hot.<\/p>\n

I was clearly experiencing dehydration.<\/p>\n

The worst fires that Idaho had in numerous years happened this year.<\/p>\n

The year of my 1600 mile bike ride all over the Idaho mountain passes and state.<\/p>\n

That at least was the plan.<\/p>\n

Presently I was out of water<\/a> and dehydration was setting in.<\/p>\n

It was hot.<\/p>\n

And I was getting dizzy.<\/p>\n

Fatigued.<\/p>\n

Confused.<\/p>\n

All of which were not making me the least bit happy.<\/p>\n

To make matters worse, this was just the first day of my 7-week ride.<\/p>\n

I had thought I found relief only to find my oasis closed.<\/p>\n

The bottom line, I was in trouble.<\/p>\n

Serious trouble.<\/p>\n

How One Simple Act Of Kindness Likely Saved My Life<\/h3>\n

I got back on my bike.<\/p>\n

I locked my feet into their clips.<\/p>\n

Prepared to continue down the road.<\/p>\n

Then I saw it.<\/p>\n

A car.<\/p>\n

Not just any car mind you.<\/p>\n

But it was a car out in the middle of what I would define as nowhere.<\/p>\n

The car was not my wife driving by which I had been hoping for.<\/p>\n

Now was it the sag wagon that was also known as my rescue car.<\/p>\n

Not that car.<\/p>\n

This car was just parked on the side of the road.<\/p>\n

It did, however, have an official look to it.<\/p>\n

Someone was in it.<\/p>\n

They were wearing a uniform.<\/p>\n

\"\"Someone that might be able to help.<\/p>\n

How did I know?<\/p>\n

I didn’t know.<\/p>\n

But I was hopeful.<\/p>\n

In part because of possible human connection.<\/p>\n

But mostly because of the bubble lights up on top of their vehicle.<\/p>\n

I approached.<\/p>\n

I waved my hand to get the officer’s attention.<\/p>\n

He rolled down his window.<\/p>\n

I explained my trouble.<\/p>\n

He could have done many things.<\/p>\n

What he did, enhanced my confidence in law enforcement.<\/p>\n

He exited his vehicle.<\/p>\n

Opened his trunk.<\/p>\n

Got into his own lunch supply.<\/p>\n

Found his water.<\/p>\n

And…<\/p>\n

Refilled my bottle.<\/p>\n

Which brought relief<\/a> to my very dehydrated body.<\/p>\n

I drank.<\/p>\n

My body responded very quickly.<\/p>\n

\"\"Dizzyness subsided.<\/p>\n

Mental clarity returned.<\/p>\n

Once again, I was ready to ride.<\/p>\n
