The community was billed by the city founders as Gateway to the Black Hills and this area was quickly lived up the moniker. Originally, it was known as Hay Camp and then it became an excellent staging ground for the wagons who were transporting the main supplies for life to the miners in the area. There has been a great variation in the population growth between 1880-1920.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
A good focus was provided for higher education by the South Dakota School of Mines. In 1927 the president Calvin Coolidge directs the significant attention of the nation towards this area by relocating white houses in the Black Hills. In the same year Gutzon Borglum started carving Mount Rushmore to establish and spark the tourism industry that is still helpful to the local population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
